A dictionary for navigators on spiritual rough waters” chapter 13: uneXpectedly; daY; amaZed.
The word that stands for “X” today is “UNEXPECTEDLY”.
“UNEXPECTEDLY”: this is a word which many Christians would want to avoid or at least delay as long as possible. But the word of Jesus is clear:
“But take heed to yourselves; lest your hearts be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that day comes on you unexpectedly.” (Luke 21:34)
What He is saying is that that particular unexpected day will definitely come. Many will not expect it but it will still come. God’s plan for this world to end will come whether humans like it or not. No amount of human wishing or scheming will stop the clock or reverse the clock of time for this world.
“For it will come as a snare on all those who dwell on the face of the whole earth.” (Luke 21:35)
What shall Christians (or rather those who believe in what Jesus said) do?
Jesus continued to say this, “Watch therefore and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man.” (Luke 21:36)
Obviously, to follow what Jesus had advised, we need to stay away from those aforementioned things that would hinder us and cause us to stumble: carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life.
The word that stands for “Y” is “DAY”.
“DAY”: Day is a form of demarcation used by God to signify changes in time and differences between two zones of time on earth. When He created the heavens and the earth He created light, divided the light from the darkness and called the light Day, and the darkness He called night. (Genesis 1:3-5)
Thus, when the word “day” is used to describe time, it means it is not in darkness. Day means light. Night means darkness. Interesting how humans have changed the order of lifestyle. In the Bible, the humans work during the day and rest at night. The wild beasts come out at night and hide during the day. This is a natural law. Humans are created to follow this biological clock of living.
Jesus warned the disciples of the spiritual truth in terms of day and night: “Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of the world. But if one walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.” (John 11:9-10)
The apostle Paul further taught this spiritual preparedness, “And do this, knowing the time that nowit is high time to wake out of sleep; for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed. The night is far spent, the day is at hand. Therefore let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light. Let us walk properly, as in the day, not in revelry and drunkenness, not in lewdness and lust, not in strife and envy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.”
The word for “Z” is “AMAZED”.
“AMAZED”: why are people amazed? The Bible taught us when people saw two unusual things in what Jesus did and they were amazed (wonder, admiration, excited at what is unexpected, unfamiliar, inexplicable, strange or remarkable things). What did Jesus do?
He preached the gospel of “the kingdom of God” and taught as one having authority.
He spoke and rebuked the unclean spirits and cast them out of humans. The unclean spirits obeyed Him.
Amazement came when people witnessed the SUPERNATURAL POWER of GOD IN JESUS:
Power over spirits: Mark 1:21-28 depicted the incident in which Jesus set free the demon possessed man in the synagogue. The people were all amazed and quehe stioned, “What is this? What new doctrine is this? For with authority He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him.” (Mark 1:27)
Power over physical illness/handicap: Mark 2:1-12 Again, He healed a paralytic in a crowded house by speaking. “Immediately he arose, took up the bed, and went out in the presence of them all, so that all were amazed and glorified God, saying, ‘we never saw anything like this!’”
Power over death: Mark 5:35-42 He raised a dead child to life by speaking. “Immediately the girl arose and walked, for she was twelve years of age. And they were all overcome with great amazement.”
Power in his words: He merely spoke and the supernatural signs and wonders materialized in the physical realm.
